  • 1.  Is setting up DNS or AD server mandatory for VCSA?

    Posted Feb 20, 2017 10:21 PM

    Hi all,

I am setting up vCSA for the first time, and have been viewing few youtube video tutorials and following them.

Do i need to install and configure DNS server or AD on my server in order for me to install VCSA?

Currently I am using the DNS address from my routers admin page, that starts with 75.xx.xx.xx

And this is how the DNS name shows shows up in my vsphere client.

And i know its not right.

    Please guide

    Hello

If you have DNS server , there are two ways for configure it.

Power of vcsa and go to here and put what ever you want. You can do it from GUI also.

    VM--> edit setting --> Option ---> Properties -->

logon by root IP address of vcsa :5480

On GUI--> Go to network tab --> Address --> then configure according to your choice

    Thanks for your replies Rajeev.

No I do not have DNS server setup.

The machine i am installing VCSA just has the ESXi installed, and infact this is the very first time I have installed it. Learning my way through. So my primary intent is to add a few VM hosts with different operating systems. However this in i a HomeLab, and i have this running only one one machine. Do i even need VCSA, thats even the question i need to know the answer for.

Or should i just first create a vmhost, install Windows Server 2016, setup DHCP, AD and or DNS server on it, and then try installing VCSA?

    Please suggest.

OK you are preparing home lab

Then you can setup in this way.

    With out domain

On vmware workstation first create VM ESXi 5.5 or 6.0 what ever you have.

If you OVF then connect ESXi by vc client and deploy vcsa vm.

If you have setup file the install first plugin on windows 7 64 bit

then run the setup it will ask host name where you want to run this vcsa.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    With domain.

    1. Build 2012 with DNS and AD.

Use this VM as scsi storage create 2 data store 150 GB each

2.Build 2012 join this vm with AD and install vcsa plugin then run the setup , but you should have running 1 ESXi on workstation which should be pin gable by you second vm.

Here I am giving my lab setup pic for understanding this is with domain.
