Is it possible to use VSphere clone image in VMWare Workstation?

Hi,

We have a vSphere environment running 3 virtual machines, I want to move one of them to a stand alone server now, so I tried to clone this virtual machine in vSphere client, after 2 hours I got a buntch of files, include a huge vmdx.

But after I copy these files to the stand alone server, the VmWare Workstation can not run this image. the Error message is "Unable to change virtual machine power state: The file specified is not a virtual disk". and in the Virtual Machine Settings of VMware Workstation, the Disk information has an error: "Unable to retrieve disk information: The file specified is not a virtual disk"

Does this means we can not load a vSphere clone image from VMware Workstation?

The image file was generated on a vSphere client 5.0.0, on the stand alone server I'm using VMware Workstation 9.0.1 build-894247

I'm pretty sure vSphere Client is the wrong tool for this.

Workstation 9 has a built-in function for this purpose - check "Download a Virtual Machine from a Remote Server" in the Workstation documentation.

Or do it the "old way" using Standalone Converter.

The cloned copy would need to be run through Converter or manually tweaked to work with Workstation. If you want to export via the vSphere Client, you would want to use the File Menu -> Export -> Export OVF Template option. This would create a package that Workstation should be able to open. Note that the VM will need to be powered off to export this way.
