  • 1.  Insufficent resources to power on virtual machine

    Posted Jan 20, 2009 08:57 PM

I thought I understood admission policies but I must not because I have a vmware HA/DRS cluster that I can not power on a virtual machine if I configure any cpu/memory reservations. The cluster consists of two servers with 12Gig of RAM each and two 3Ghz dual-core processors. Below is the CPU and memory Resource Allocations. I tried to power on a virtual machine that was migrated from a physical box. I configured the VM with 1gig RAM and a single processor. If I do not have any reservations the vm powers on fine. If I add memory reservations, the VM will not power on due to in sufficent resources. I have tried reservations of 512 and 384 and neither would allow me to power on the VM. According to the unreserved memory I should have more than enough to power on the VM in the cluster, even on the individual host I have at least 5 gig available so it should not be to a limitation of the individual host. Any ideas.

The issue is with how HA calculates resources needed for failover -It calculates the number of slots available by assuming each vm on the cluster will have a reservation equal to the VM with the largest reservation - so in your example you have 14 machines running the largest reservation is 1024 MB so if there is a failure of your ESX server HA assumes you will need 14 GB (14x 1 GB) of memory and yout temaining host will only have 12 GB - check out page 75 of the Resource Management Guide from http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/vi_pages/vi_pubs_35u2.html

I have HA configured to Allow VMs to be powered on even if they violate availability constraints, which I thought would allow me to power on the VM with reservations.

Which version of VC are you using? Is it VC 2.5 update 2?

This is a bug that has been fixed in VC 2.5 update 3. Check out this thread for some more details:
