Is it possible to install an ESXi 4.0 on a system with two Quad Core Xeon processors? Currently we have server with one Quad Core Xeon processor, and a free license, which is for "1 physical processor and up to 6 cores". Will it be possible to use a dual processor system with the free ESXi 4.0 ?

Yes, dual-CPU systems will work under the free version of ESXi. I've got three boxes here with dual quad-core CPUs and they work fine. The number should update when you install a second proc.

Thank you very much for your answer! Here's the next question: where can we get the license key for such a system? As we understood, it's possible to get only a single-processor license from VMware support.

when you registered for ESXi, you would have been asked how many CPU licenses you needed. It can be anywhere between 1 - 999. You can also go back and edit the count as well, and a new key will be issued.

Not last time I checked. When you filled out the form for your free license it should have asked you how many CPUs you planned to use it on. Just type in "999" and it will work fine. Honestly though, I think that's just for survey purposes and that all the keys will work with multi-CPU systems, even if you entered "1". WCS on that is that you have to reregister and get a different key.

Thank you both, now it's clear for us what to do - get these 3k$ for such a box :smileywink:
