Install PV124T and TL2000 on Ubuntu VM

Hello,

I have a PowerEdge 2950 with a TL2000 and a PV124T Tape autoloader connected to it. The Host is running ESXi 4 and I manage it using vCenter server. I have an Ubuntu 10.04 VM that I want to use to manage the tape backups using Novastor software. In order for Novastor to work with the Dell tape machines they have to be installed on the Ubuntu VM.

I cannot figure out how to make the tape machines visible to the VM. I followed the steps listed here: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1016407. When I get to step 10 all I can see is the CD drive on the PowerEdge 2950; there are no other options to choose from.

Any suggestions?

Is the SCSI adapter on the Hardware Compatibility List and

• As of vSphere 4.0, ESX only supports connectivity to parallel SCSI tape libraries.

• VMware only supports the attaching of Parallel SCSI based tape Devices to an Adaptec SCSI Controller, see Page 20 of the Virtual Machine Backup Guide for further information

The SCSI Adapter installed in the PowerEdge 2950 is Adaptec 39160. I was unable to find the 39160 on the HCL, but I highly doubt VMware would have compatibility for the 29160 and the 39320 and not the 39160.

I also could not find a document called "Virtual Machine Backup Guide." Do you have a link?

Don't assume anything when it comes to the HCL.

Is there a way to add the appropriate driver to my ESX(i) installation? Adaptec has a linux version of the driver for the 39160. If I can't add the tape backup systems, then is there a way to add external USB drives to ESX(i)?
