Host Profile - subprofiles and policies

Hi, I require urgent info on configuration settings for sub host profiles and policies as there is limited or no VMware documentation available - I'm particlularly after storage sub-profile configuration e.g. to ensure all hosts see same LUNs, same multi-pathing etc.

    Any pointers are appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi,

What are you trying to do? Normally the best way to work with host profiles is to build your working esx server with the required configuration then capture the host profile from that server from which you can apply it to other servers that need the same configuration.

Yep, I've done that and the cluster is compliant. However, there are certain settings that must be removed from the profile created by ref host for this to work, i.e. settings that are unique to each host. I have this working.

What I wish to do is fine tune the profile - hence, query related to additional info for sub-profile settings.

What kinds of settings do you have in mind. As far as the storage goes, we what luns your hosts can see, I'm assuming this is detemined by your san fabric zoning rather than your host profiles.

As can be seen from the screenshot - an explanation of each subprofile/policy is required.

Well, looking at your screenshot, none of the storage options are selected, which suggests that the host you took the profile off doesn't have anything ither than the default. E.g. no iscsi initiator settings, no FCOE, and the default multipathing options haven't been changed.

    Is this correct?

Yes, I deliberately, unchecked these due to local disk, and also do know how to address in KB: 2002488.

By basic question is NOT regards to what has been configured, but whether there is any documenation out there regards to sub-profile/policy settings.

yep, it's high-level and dosn't go into detail regards to each sub profile settings & definition ...etc.

I've raised a ticket with VMware, and await feedback.

thats cool - its not something that appears to be that well documented.  This post talks about it in detail but pretty much links back to resources you have probably already seen.
