  • 1.  Help with VC Server and low disk space

    Posted Mar 20, 2009 01:23 AM

We run our Virtual Center as a VM. It has a 90gb Virtual Disk. I know this is probably not best practice, but this was setup before I came in. The hard drive is running out of disk space (3gb remaining). I am wondering where all the space is getting taken up from. I am also wondering what to do next. I thought about just extending the disk to like 150gb. But I am thinking this is not best practice.

Can anyone recommend me some options on what I should do. I would like to do this right and not have any downtime.

    Thanks.

    hi

Do a v2v of the Virtual Center Server and when disksize configuration resize harddisk with 150GB. I hope rest you know how to do.

    Thanks

I would analyse the server to figure out what is going wrong -what is taking up all the sapce. If you extend the disk - yes it will give you some breathing space, but you're not finding the cause of the problem..... if there is one.

Is the VC database hosted locally?

What else runs on the server?

I would analyze the VM first too. DB plays critical part. If you have MS SQL server watchout for recovery mode. Full recovery mode will really kill your space like anything. recommended mode is 'simple'

    Try shrink log.

If your database is local SQL (sounds like) , and it is 2.x, and its using full recovery mode for SQL, you probably have some large translogs and you also could have lots of data that has piled up over time in the database that could be purged.

Look through the file system first, just like you would with any other server and find out what is using the space. On the ass-umption that your database is local, full recovery mode, and the database is a few years old and no or little maintenance has been done, this kb may help

If it is not the DB or if these conditions do not apply, then hopefully a search through the file system will lead you in the right direction.

Yes, that is what it was. I was able to shring the transaction log and change the database recovery type. I also implemented a maintanence plan so hopfefully this doesn't happen again.

    Thanks for all the comments
