  • 1.  Guest NIC Teaming

    I have a Dell T620 w/ dual hexacore Xeon E5's and 128GB of memory and 4x GbE NICs running ESXi 5.5 with 4 vms. I already teamed those 4 adapters to a Dell managed GbE switch (LBFO, not LACP).

    For arguably good reasons, but to avoid argument, because I darn well want to, I want to team two GbE Intel Pro/1000 MT virtual adapters (again, LBFO, not LACP) on my Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Standard VM.

    I tried the "workarounds" that one would use on physical servers that happened to have the doomed Pro/1000 MT PCI-X cards in Windows Server 2008 R2. However, the PROset tools just refuse to install. Using Windows "Bridge Connections" just caused the adapters to lose all network access. I do not wish to use direct access to the physical adapters, Oddly enough, Windows Server 2012, works fine with Microsoft's NIC teaming. And, it didn't cause a black hole to open and destroy the entire space-time continuum, Now, gimme my pony!

    Seriously, has anyone gotten this to work on Windows Server 2008 R2?

    Why would you want to team adapters inside of a vm? :smileyconfused:

    It's a Terminal server that runs a network intensive application. 15-20 users logging in to it and then running this application that needs to talk to a database server and it's licensing doesn't allow multiple terminal servers.

    Hi PhiMke13,

    i use a lot of Terminalserver (some of them Clusterd)  @Work, running applications wich are conneted to Oracle Databases.

    I only use 1 VMXNET3 Virtual Adapter per TS having no Performance issues.

    If you move your Database Server (having the same VMXNET3 NIC) on the same host and vSwitch as your Terminal Server the Network Traffic won´t even leave the Host. That would get you the maximum performance.

    Be that as it may, I would still like to team the adapters. Like I said in the OP, less "why would you want to" and more "how can it be done".

    Also ESXi defaults to the 1000MT, is their a benefit to the VMXNET3?
