  • 1.  Graceful shutdown with PowerChute or Script?

    In the event of an extended power outage, I used to be able to gracefully shutdown the VMs and ESXi in version 5.0 (I thought the free version too).  It doesn't look like I can do this the same way in 5.1?

    I had an APC UPS and PowerChute installed on a Windows VM.  When PowerChute detected the power loss, it was setup to run this script via the vSphere CLI:

    @START "" "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin\vicfg-hostops.pl" --username=root --password=********* --server=192.168.39.20 --operation shutdown --force

    Vsphere was set to "shutdown guest" and automatic startup.  This would gracefully shutdown the VMs and then ESXi before the power was lost.

    Now, with 5.1 - I am getting this error:  "Current license or ESXi version prohibits execution of the requested operation.  Fault detail: RestricedVersionFault"

    Is there a way to have PowerChute run a script to gracefully shut down ESXi 5.1 free?

    I don't know the answer to your specific question. Have you tried installing PCNS 301 for ESXi5 on the vMA and initiating the shutdown that way? That works for me on the non-free version of 5.1. Maybe it works with the free version too. HTH.

    Thanks, but this has to work with PowerChute Business Edition.  We have several clients that have APC UPS with no network connection - only USB.

    I had that problem at first so I bought APC cards for the UPS's that I have. Assuming you have slots for them, the cards can be found on ebay for less than $100. USB be gone...

    This may explain why your scripts won't work.

    Never mind...I see you were in that discussion too.

    I use the APC tools for graceful shutdown of ESXi VM's followed by the ESXi host.  It requires an APC Network Kit - i use the AP9617 Network Card.  The configuration interfaces are gui - not scripts.  This works directly on an ESXi - you don't need Essentials or vSphere (ie, free ESXi is fine)
