  • 1.  Failed USB thumbdrive - just plug a new one in?

    Hi,  my USB thumbdrive gave out after running for a couple years.  The ESXi host is still up and running and I don't currently have a backup of the config.  I understand that it writes the config from memory back to the USB every ~10 or so.  I have already rebuilt a new USB thumbdrive with the same version of the running ESXi  (4.0 U1) so my question is, can I just simply plug it in and let it write the config to the USB disk, or do I need to back up the config and restore it to the thumbdrive first?  Thank you!

    Hi what I am thinking the bets way is take backup then simply plug and let it write ,if no output please restore  from backup.

    So I put the USB thumbdrive in, and the config didn't copy.   So I ran the -load option for the vibackup and it sent the config over and rebooted.

    Now inbetween there, I had to edit the /sdb5 boot.cfg to add the kernelopt=nocheckCPUIDLimit because that is apparently not passed when you do a restore and I'm running on a Dell SC1420 which requires that option to boot.
