I have a basic AMD X2 4600+ setup, when I try to install ESXi 4 it gets so far then reports

    Failed to load lvmdriver

alt F11 displays lvmdriver failed to load with status -1, -1, 0xbad0001.

altF12 reports some additional stuff if needed

    Anyone with any ideas ?

    Hello,

Verify that your storage controller is on the HCL. It could be related to that. Or there could be other issues related to the chipset in use.

The "Failed to load LVMDRIVER" error means that ESXi has not detected any supported network controller, not storage. ESXi needs a MAC address from a network card to generate UUIDs for the new installation.

    Possible solutions:

    • Look at the ESXi 4.0 Whitebox HCL - maybe your motherboard is listed there with some notes on how to get it working (if a driver is available, you may need to play with oem.tgz during installation).

    • Add a supported Ethernet card to the system (Intel gigabit cards are usually recommended).

Thanx that is probably it, it's a bottom end M/B $63 the link you sent show the M2N68 ASUS board has no issues I'll switch to that.

It's just a testing environment. Am I right in reading somewhere that there is a conversion program to allow VMWare Server VM's to be migrated to ESXi ?

VMware Converter - the stand alone version if free and you'll be able to import your VMs from Server to ESXi.
