  • 1.  ESXi server polling with Solarwinds Orion NPM

    Posted Jul 10, 2012 12:52 PM

I am running ESX1 4.1 U2 and we just purchased Orion NPM 10.2.2.  I have successfully connected the host to Orion by creating a local user on the ESXi host and giving it ReadOnly permissions.   This all works fine Orion is polling the CPU, MEM, Disk, the VM guests, ect..  However the Hardware status shows “Hardware polling failed: Polling of chassis (CIM_Chassis class) failed. Unable to establish session with all provided credentials”  I am able to correct this by assigning the Administrator role to my local user.

Here is the problem.  I don’t want to give this account full admin permissions to monitor my hosts.   I tried cloning the Administrators Role but it dosen’t allow Orion to poll CIM hardware stats.  What am I missing Why does the default role work but not the clone? What is different?

No replys yet, I haven't worked much on it.  For now I have more access for the Orion account than I like.

    Thanks,

    Hello,

Verify everything in the Cloned Role is identical to the original, something may be different. Also, you may want to open a SR with VMware if they are identical. I would also open an SR with Solarwinds about the issue. However, since Solarwinds generally works off of SNMP generally, it could be an SNMP permissions problem... You may wish to check into your ESXi SNMP configuration. The CIM server may also has its own permissions, and that may also be the issue. I am not sure how to modify CIM server perms if they even can be. This would be a question within the SR for VMware.

    Best regards,
