  • 1.  ESXi host doesnt see datastore after reboot

    Hi All,

    I'm new to the community and to ESXi itself.  Everything was working great until today when I rebooted my host.

    I have it installed on a Dell T110 server we had in the back for testing.  It has a 250GB HDD installed in the case.  ESXi installed fine and I had 220GB or so of storage at my disposal.  Installed multiple VM's and again everything seemed to be working fine.

    Today I wanted to enable usb passthrough for a Server 2008 VM i have installed, so I went through the process and had to reboot the host to finish.

    After the reboot It seems to have forgotten about the HDD that is installed and I no longer can see my datastore or access the VM's I had running.

    There are a couple screenshots attachedthat display what I am seeing.

    it might help if you provide some details about what exactly you modified on the host.

    So the screenshot below is exactly what I turned on.  I feel it may have something to do with the sata controller I added for passthrough but I cant seem to turn that off.  I go to edit and then uncheck it and reboot and it stays up.

    Is this the same controller to which the 250GB HDD is attached? Passing the controller to the VM might have unpresented it from the host, so you won't be able to access it and to store any configuration settings. Since this is a test system you may consider/try to run "Reset System Configuration" from the DCUI. If this does not work, you might have to reinstall ESXi from CD (preserving the VMFS datastore of course).

    You were right!  I had given the VM the sata controller so all it could do was boot up.  I tried to reset it back to factory but i had also successfully given conrol of the usb ports so that didnt work haha.  Re-installing and keeping the VMFS partition intact was exactly what it needed.
