Esxi 6.5 and VMware Tools

We have an older VMware environment that will be upgraded in Q1 of next year.

Currently we are running ESXi 6.5.0 on a host with Windows Server 2012 R2 VMs.  VMware tools version 10.3 is installed on the VMs.  I am being asked by our IS Security team to update to a newer version of VMware Tools (version 12.3.5).  Is version 12.3.5 of VMware tools backward compatible with the version of ESXi and Windows server I am running?  I thought VMware tools needed to match the host.

With ESXi 6.5 vmware tool ( 12.3.5) will not work Refer below screen shot.
