I have a 2 host ESX 4 cluster and the memory resources on one host shows 53% and the other shows 78%. What happens when one of the hosts fails? Will I not be able to recover all of the running vms on a single host? HA is enabled but shows "Do not power on if it violates availablity" So it appear that i will need to add another host so i can put one of these 2 esx hosts in maintence mode to patch.

    Is this correct?

    Thanks

If you want to be able to patch your ESXi hosts without VM downtime then yes it does look like you will need another host.

If however some of your VMs are test/dev you could manually shut them down before putting a host in maintenance mode for patching.
