  • 1.  Error message trying to reconfigure Management network on a host

Not very experienced deploying/configuring vsphere. I pulled an old host off a shelf running 6.0 that I was hoping to get updated and use for something else. I powered it on, logged in from the console as root, identified the physical ports being used for the management network, and connected them to a switch. I modified the management address, and it asks me to restart the management network to apply the change. When I say yes, it immediately fails stating that it is unable to set the VMKernal gateway address - Sysinfo error on operation returned status: Network Unreachable. The network adapters that are checked off for the management port are showing as connected. I know the switch ports and address are valid because I confirmed it with a laptop. The VmKernel log just says the same thing. Trying to figure out what I could be missing. Is there anything obvious that I could be forgetting about?

Please make sure the connection with the new switch you are connecting is fine.

Also, try to reach the gateway with another device, you can use same ip configure in you laptop to test the connectivity.

I've done that, which is why I'm so perplexed. There is a Vlan tag associated with the network I'm putting it on, but I've also set that accordingly in the settings. I've compared the settings side by side to other ESXi hosts in the same network on the same switch. Everything is identical, except the IP address of course. Doesn't make sense why it keeps throwing this error at me. Could there be some conflict with the settings I am configuring on the console and any network settings that may have been configured in the Vsphere client prior to this host getting shut down in its old environment?
