  • 1.  Does the Standalone Support VMware Server as a Target?

    Posted Nov 01, 2009 09:45 PM

Just tried converting a Running PC to VMware but I get stuck on the destination page saying that it only support ESX, ESXi and vCenter server. It clearly states on the vCenter Converter info page that it supports VMware Server as a target.

Has anyone managed to convert to a VMware server with the Standalone converter?

    Regards,

    Lee.

    Hi,

Are you using the VMWare Standalone Converter 4.0, if so then you will be able to convert VM that are in ESX/ESXi 4.0 to VMWare Server.

Select the destination type to be VMware Workstation or Other virtual machine and the VMWare product to be your VMWare Server - could be either VMWare Server 1.x or 2.x. You will also need to provide the name of VM and location where you want your converted VM to be.

I have converted many ESXi 4.0 VMs to VMWare Server 1.0 using the Standalone converter 4.0

Hope this will help you solve your problem.

    Regards

    Hi Nikhil,

I am using the Standalone Converter 4.0 but I'm trying to convert a "Powered-on machine" to a VMware Server machine. Is it possible? because it its not allowing me to do it.

    Thanks,

    Lee

    Hi Lee

It could be the reason, because I always power off the VM before conversion,

have never tried converting a VM that is powered on. If your VM is not that

much critical then first power it off and start the conversion.

    Hi Nikhil,

When I say its a "powered on machine" I mean its not a VM but a "real" machine. So what I'm actualy trying to do is convert a real computer to a VM in VMware server but it only gives me the option of converting it to a ESX/ESXi VM I dont have the option to convert it to a VMware server.

    Thanks,

    Lee.

Ok, I think the problem is that I'm trying to convert a "real" Linux machine and when configuring the target it doesn't give me the option to change the destination type. It sets the type to VMware Infrastructure without the option to change it to VM workstation/server.

So unless I've missed something, in the Standalone Converter you can only convert a "live" windows machines to VMware server. Is this correct?

    Lee

you should have mentioned the Linux-source earlier - it would have saved yourself a lot of time waiting for the NO answer.

AFAIK you must do both the imaging and patching manually - if you do not have a ESX as a temporary target
