  • 1.  Disk consolidation required

    Hello,

I have several virtual machines that appear to me with the warning "It is required to consolidate disks". I have deleted all snapshots (using the "Delete all snapshots" option). I have proceeded to consolidate the disks, but the warning continues to appear. I have checked the Virtual Machine files and there are still files -0000x.vmdk. Also, analyzing the .vmx, I have verified that it refers to a disk -0000x.vmdk. What can I do to solve this problem?

    Best regards,

    Santi

Do you have a VM based backup application running? Please verify that neither the backup server itself nor any backup proxies (if applicable) have one of the VM's .vmdk's still mounted. This sometimes happens if backups are interrupted, and the backup application does not have some kind of housekeeping (cleaning up) implemented.

In case one of the .vmdk files is still mounted, remove it from the backup system (do NOT select the delete from disk option!).

    Hello André,

Thank you very much for your help!

We do the backups with a Synology tool. Researching it, I can't find any option where I can unmount the disk in the synology tool. The tool is Active Backup For Business. Is there a way to release this "lock" from vmware?

    Best regards,

    Santi

Sorry, but I'm not familiar with that tool. Also note that it's just a guess that the backup may hold file locks.

Did you run the snapshot consolidation /snapshot deletion while the VM was powered on? In this case the VM's vmware.log files should contain hints regarding the issue that blocks the deletion.
