  • 1.  Discover host information from within guest

I have systems that are designed to run on a dedicated ESXi 5 host.  We had an instance where someone migrated the guest off of the dedicated host to another VM farm.  I was posed with the question "is there a way to identify the host information when all you have is remote access to the guest such as RDP or PCAnywhere?"

I had never had cause to attempt to retrieve such information in this format.  I thought perhaps there is a way from within vmware tools that is running on the guest to retrieve perhaps partial information.

That would have been great except the article was apparently written for a different version as I do not have the exe file that he referring to.  It seems that unfortunately the benefit of these being portable is also their downside.

To be honest, I am also searching on way for the above But since the Guest OS sees itself as a physical machine its a hassle to look for anything apart from the VMware tools.

    Thanks,
