  • 1.  deploying NSX-T Manager to ESXi , then integrate with vCenter?

    Hello all,

Is there a way to deploy NSX-T Manager VMs directly on ESXi, then integrate with vCenter?
Is there any documented procedure we could follow for this ?

We are exploring a way to deploy all VMs first (including vCenter), configure them later once they are all up and accessible via REST API.

    Thanks
    ranga

Technically, yes you can deploy NSX-T manager to ESXi and then integrate with vCenter, I have done it in my lab.

What is rational behind deploying VM before NSX-T is configured and then using Rest-API to move it to NSX-T backed network. It will be easier if this ESXI host will be part of vCenter later to move VMs

Thank you for your reply and confirming that it is technically possible. I am still looking for a documented procedure that can be used in production environments.

Yes, the idea is that all 3 ESXi hosts (on which 3 NSX-T manager VMs will be deployed) will be added to the a cluster on vCenter, once vCenter comes up.

We already have an implementation that deploys NSX-T after vCenter has been deployed and configured. There are reasons for exploring an alternate approach. We have a need to use terraform for deploying and configuring a data center, this includes NSX-T. As of now we use the vsphere terraform provider tp deploy the NSX-T Manager VMs from OVA, then the NSX-T terraform provider to configure them. However the provider initialization requires the NSX-T Manager REST API endpoints to be available at the beginning. So I am wondering if we could somehow deploy the VMs before the terraform flow starts, then use terraform to make any necessary modifications and configuration.

The same issue exists with vCenter deployment and configuration too, because of how terraform and the providers are written. I am not trying to address the terraform/provider problems in this question.

    ,

You could perform that option by using OVFTool and deploying directly inside the ESXi: https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-NSX/4.1/installation/GUID-5843917A-A1D1-4D19-B9B0-0FD4C900C31C.html

Once that is done, you could form the cluster using the CLI: https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-NSX/4.1/installation/GUID-9F3C8273-FA5F-41C8-85CA-436F8D34977D.html

I believe these options would be suitable for you.
