  • 1.  Dell 10Gb mezzanine card shows as a 1Gb in vSphere 5

I have an issue, and I hope I can get some help with this. I've just installed a vSphere 5 environment. The hosts are runnig on Dell M610 blade servers. Each server has a 10 GbE mezzanine card, and the M1000e chasse uses two 3130x Cisco Catalyst switches . The switches stack is  connected through the stackwise ports. This configuration according to Dell and all the documentation is supposed to support 10 Gb connections, however; from the ESX host network adapters I see the vNICs assigned to the Broadcom 10G card running at 1 GB only. Any suggestions on what I need to check or enable to be able to get the 10Gb throughput?

    Thank you.

The Message shown here is related to the speed and duplex setting we do for the network adapter.. It doesnt mean that your 10Gig adapter as showing as 1Gig.

As per VMware best practise the Speed and duplex setting for 10Gb  should be set to auto negotiate refer below KB:

    http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1004089

Also you need to make sure this is a end to end 10Gig support is there.. your server as 10G, make sure you switch also supports that. then you need to  check the jumbo frames MTU setting should be same as physical switch or recommended by network admin.

I know this is late but did you ever get this resolved Andy? I'm having the same issue except my bladeswitch is a Powerconnect m8024-k.

The mezzanine cards are Broadcom 57711 10GbE cards and I applied the latest available driver (bnx2x version 1.70.34.v50.1). Still no luck.

    Thanks,

Scratch that...we figured out the issue for us was an incompatibility between the bladeswitch (m8024-k) and the mezzanine card for that switch (10Gb XAUI type). The mezzanine card was a legacy version (BCM57711) which I will have to replace with the newer BCM57712-k card (note the -k on the switch and card). Then we will be running at 10Gb. :smileyhappy:

    Cheers!

The Cisco 3130X IO Module is a 1GB switch with 10GB uplinks.  All the internal server facing ports are 1GB.  There are 10GB external ports to uplink to your fabric.

    Hope that helps...
