  • 1.  Datastore automatically fills itself

    Posted Jun 18, 2012 02:03 PM

    Dear users,

I have a strange problem which I don't understand. It looks like our datastore is holding some GB's.
I will try my best to explain the situation that is currently happing so that maybe someone can help me further or can give me some good advice on this problem.

In our current situation where I'm facing the problem we are having 2 LUN's.
    LUN1:
    Capacity: 1.36TB
    Provisioned Space: 1.42TB
    Free Space: 79.45B

    LUN2:
    Capacity: 1.36TB
    Provisioned Space: 1.98TB
    Free Space: 28.75

I know and understand we have shared to much, but that isn't the problem I'm having.

What happend before I noticed the datstore was eating al our TB's?

Our APP05 server was damaged and I had to clone it to restore the damage that was done.
When I wanted to clone the VM I noticed I didn't had the space to clone this server which is total 150GB of hard disk.
So I had deleted 3 old server's from our datastore and moved 2 out of our datastore and put them on a temp location so I could later set them back

Moved out of the datastore on a temp location:

    APP04: 170GB

    Unixtest: 140GB

    Deleted from the datastore:

    Temp1: 25GB

    Unix3: 25GB

Now I could clone the VM, which was in the succesful. (APP05-Temp)
So when the clone was succesful and it was working I deleted the damaged one. (APP05)
Then I made again a copy of the clone (APP05-Temp) and gave it the right name back. (APP05)

Now this server was working again but I saw an other server had also a problem so I also cloned our DM01 server.
Just like I did with the APP05 server.

Then when everything was finshed, I wanted to put back the Unixtest servers in the datastore.
But I saw I had no more room to place the server back in the datastore since there wasn't enough room on the datastores like you see above.
So now I'm wondering how is it possible that our datastore is using/holding GB's which are in fact free and is now preveting me from adding the servers back into the datastore?

    What have I done?
    1. I firsted check all servers if there were any snapshots, but there weren't any

    2. Are there any folders I'm not aware of in the datastore, but this wasn't the case

I hope someone can give me some good advice/hints/tips or anything in a the right direction.

    Kind regards
    Martijn

Alright, let me take a stab at this

    First free space: 75GB

               APP04: 170GB

               Unixtest: 140GB

              Temp1: 25GB

              Unix3: 25GB

So total free space after moving and deletion : 435GB

Now, App05VM size is 150 GB,

So when the clone was succesful and it was working I deleted the damaged one. (APP05)

Then I made again a copy of the clone (APP05-Temp) and gave it the right name back. (APP05)

So two App05 VMS are there now, which makes the free space as 435-300GB = 135GB

Now this server was working again but I saw an other server had also a problem so I also cloned our DM01 server.

Now, I am taking DM01 to be 50 GB just for guess  free space would be 85GB, while the UnixTest from first step is around 140GB  I dont see why not this is not possible :smileysilly:

    Dear zXi_Gamer,

Thank you for answering but the problem is that before I made any changes in our vCenter I had all the servers running.
But after the cloning and removing the clone it is not possible to put all the VM's back in our datastore.
And before I had made any changes all the servers were running in our datastore.

Now I'm goin to ask probaly a real dumb qeustion but if I don't ask I won't know.
Do the datastores (LUN's) have some of trash can were deleted stuff is being placed after its deleted?

NO, the vmfs datastores will hold the data pertaining to the VMs like vmdks, snapshots, vm files and folders. Unless we have placed any file particularly. You can perform the following on the datastore to find out which VM has caused the increase in size.

    #du -sh *

Since the "Provisioned Space" is higher tha the "Capacity" on both  datastores there are either snapshots or you are using thin  provisioning.

How did you check for snapshots? Using the Snapshot Manager? This is not a reliable and you need to check for snapshots by either looking for -00000x.vmdk files in the VM's datastore folders or using a tool like RVTools (http://www.robware.net/)

I have created a case at the support from VMware because I don't have that knowledge to understand what is going on.
I expect a call today or tomorow and then will let you know what the solution or problem is.

And yes I do use Thin but aswell thick and I also use that in combination for some servers.

For know I both want to thank you for helping and considering any solutions that are suiting my problem.

    Kind regards,
    Martijn
