  • 1.  Creating Luns from local disks.

I have some physical machines here, they have two disks (300GB each one in RAID 1). I´ve configured each one as a host ESX with their disks as LOCAL at the vcenter.

Is possible to share their disks or part of them(maybe partitioning) as Luns? if it is possible, i would configure some clusters and enable HA. =)

What you want is VSA : http://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vsphere/vsphere-storage-appliance/overview.html

for the low density of your disks you might be better off buying a nas box

    Hi,

It's not possible without virtualizing your hosts' storage with products like Datacore, VMware Storage Appliance, StoreMagic, etc

You could also create one VM to present that storage thru NFS to the other host but that wouldn't do the trick for HA, etc.

    Thanks for the StorMagic mention.

And Correct, your hosts need to be virtualized, funny enough we get requests every so often for sinlge licenses to present storage but as you say, you dont get HA here. Essentiallt Storage Virtual Appliances like SvSAN are here to cost effectively enable VMware features such as HA, FT, DRS and vMotion.

:smileyhappy: Good to know but, please have into account that in VSA,

"Server 1" mirrors to "Server 2"

"Server 2" mirrors to "Server 3" and

"Server 3" mirrors to "Server 1"

This means that maybe you will need more physical discs to achieve the amounto of storage you want to have.

In any case, I think your question is answered and if you have any questions later regarding, which Storage virtualization solution is more appropiate for your scenario or technical issues with the ones you are testing, another "discussion" should be opened.
