creating a lab

I am trying to create a standalone lab on an esxi 5.1 host.

I created 2 vm’s and a vswitch that is not connected to a physical adapter

I added both vm’s to the vswitch

How do I get the vm’s to communicate?  What IP’s do I use?

I have tried several combinations of settings, but nothing works.  They cannot ping each other.

What am I missing?

You can use an IPs for the VMs that you want as long as they're on the same subnet.   Do you have any firewall software running on the VMs that might prevent PING response?
