  • 1.  copying between virtual disks very slow

    I am runing esxi 4.1 with 4 x sata 1tb drives on a dell perc5e in a raid 10 config.

The server has 4 x intel pcie gigabit nics. Copying files over the network is fine and the drives are getting maxed out.

However, copying between vmdk's is very slow on the same vm. The vm is a fedora 14 with 5 vmdks. Filesystem on the vm is ext4.

Can anybody shed any light on this?

does your raid card comes with cache? without the cache performance of such storage would be very slow ..

yes, it's got 512mb cache on the card. i'll take a closer look at that to see if there's anything i can adjust although I haven't altered anything from the default.

sorry, my mistake. I was using winscp to copy files from drive to drive and the pc with winscp was on a different vlan with the router having a 100mb interface. After using a pc on the same vlan as the files that needed copied, everything was fine. DOH!
