  • 1.  Converting a VM from the Cloud to Local

    Hello,

I need to convert a VM that a Cloud provider locates. I want to send it over the Internet to my Vcenter locally. Vcenter, locally installed, has a public IPv4.

Could you please tell me which ports I need to open, so the Vcenter Converter installed in the cloud VM can connect to the Vcenter?

    Thank you

    Edy

For vCenter, you need to enable port 443. Additionally, VMware Converter requires a direct connection to the ESX server, so for ESX, you need to enable ports 443 and 902.

but It is recommended to install VMware Converter near the destination so better install VMware converter in your vCenter and If you have a firewall in the Cloud, allow incoming traffic on ports 22 and 443. For Windows conversion in proxy mode, install the VMware Converter agent on your source VM and allow traffic on port 9089.

Thanks, so I can also install the Converter in the same network where the Vcenter is and remotely connect to the VM I want to convert over the internet. I didn't know that.

    Hello,

For the ports, better see the doc page, there are some intricacies related to ports to ESXi host (its version, whether it is managed).

Note also that, if you install Converter near the destination (which, as Rohit mentioned, is recommended) you may want to install Converter Agent manually on the source machine even for direct conversion (w/o proxy mode); otherwise SMB related ports need to be open in order to deploy it from Converter machine.
