  • 1.  convert hyper-v vhd to ESXi

    Hi,

I would like to convert a hyper-v server to ESXi. The hyper-v system is running 4 windows 2008 x64 VMs. I have now installed VMware Converter on the host system and powered down the VMs, however I cannot select the images to be converted to the ESXi server. Can someone tell me how I would be able to complete this task.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

To convert Hyper-V VMs to ESXi you will need to covert them "as physical machines". For this you need to power on the VMs and provide the IP address of these VMs. They will be treated as physical machines for conversion.

Also note that our last GA release of stand-alone converter does not support Windows 2008. So you will need to use converter built into WS 6.5 OR converter built into VC 2.5 (update 2). Unfortunately, there is no way to achieve what you are trying to do with stand-alone converter 3.0.3.

Ok I have also a WS 6.5 licence. How can a convert the files using WS 6.5?

In WS you click on file->import. This will bring up converter. Choose "source type" as physical machine. Make sure that the hyper-v VM that you want to import is powered-on and provide its IP adress + credentials.

It should be simple from that point on.

The process that I found to be straight forward is as follows:

    1. Create new virtual machine with an existing virtual hard drive using Virtual PC
    2. Rename Virtual PC file from VMCX to VMC file extension
    3. Use VMWare Convertor to convert this new Virtual PC virtual machine
    4. Open Virtual Machine in VMWare Workstation

That’s essentially the process and if you are a power user go ahead and convert at your will.

If not, have a look at my post, Convert Hyper-V Virtual Machine to VMWare Virtual Machine.
