    Hello

I would like to connect a 1TB USB disk to a ESXi 4 server in order to backup the vm files, I found some articles on internet that explain how do it, like this one:

    http://www.vladan.fr/plug-in-the-external-usb-drive-to-esx-server-directly-to-backup-or-copy/

but no one of them work, the problem is that the I can't retrive an usable device name, even if I using the command fdisk -l it see the usb disk. But with the mount command it say that the device doesn' t exist whatever name I put

Someone managed to connect successfully an USB disk ? There is some link or doc ?

    Thanks

    Raven

Have tried to do something similar with little or know success, I would wait a few weeks and see what happens, the next version of vSphere 4.x has better USB support to pass through external devices to VM's so imagine support to use for what you want will be better.

It has been reported that USB attached storage will be supported in an upcoming release but I would suggest that you have a look at a small NAS device that supports NFS. There are many in the $100 - $500 range, some even on the Hardware Compatibility list. They connect to the ESXi host as a datastore and in most cases can also be connected as a Windows share. Some if not most can also use hot add USB storage.

Would be a good suggestion I use an Iomega StorCenter ix4-200d in my home lab and it works great, highly recommend one.
