  • 1.  Configuring ISA Server 2006 with HA - Suggestions

    Hello guys,

I am planning to virtualize an ISA server 2006 and set if for High Availability.

My worries are about network connections.

Now the ISA Server is working with 2 NICs. One is connected to my LAN and the other to an ISP Modem or Router (WAN Link).

I don´t see problems to virtualize the LAN NIC but what happens with the cable that is actually connected to WAN Link?

    Imagine 2 different scenarios.

First one: without HA. Only one ESX 4.0 host.

I will have to configure my vSwitch using a physical NIC connected to the same LAN segment that ISA uses actually.

What about the other WAN connection? Should I have to connect the WAN connection to one of the NICs of ESX and dedicate it just to ISA Virtual Machine? (From ISP Modem to Physical NIC of ESX?)

Let me know if this is correct or not..

Second one: With HA. 2 ESXs sharing FC SAN storage.

If I have to connect a network cable from my ISP Modem to one of the physical ESXs NICs and dedicate this connection to ISA Virtual Machine what will happen in case of a failure in Host 1. Will this VM migrate to other host ? Do I have to manually exchange the physical cable (WAN Link) that for obvious reasons remains in failed ESX and connect it to the other ESX?

Please guys help me to open my mind and clarify this.

    Hello.

First one: without HA. Only one ESX 4.0 host.

Yes, create a vSwitch for the WAN connection and dedicate it to the ISA VM.

If you lose a host, then there will be no migration of the virtual machine. The ISA VM will be started on the second host, in the event this happens. You would need to manually change the cable out for the WAN connection. One way around this might be to put a physical switch between the ESX servers and the ISP modem. That would allow you to have everything cabled and ready with no manual intervention required.

    Good Luck!
