We are installing RedHat ES 5.4 64 bit on top of Vmware ESXI 4 Update 1 (Dell PowerEdge T710)

We are getting a message when Red Hat starts :

cannot setup NMI watchdog on CPU 0

cannot setup NMI watchdog on CPU 1

Our developers tell us that they need NMI watchdog running on the machine.

Red Hat says that this is a Vmware issue and not Red Hat. We are just beginning with Vmware and we're hoping to move VSphere later on but right now we're using the free version of ESXI 4. (first we want to see how it will work for us).

Can anybody help us to enable the capability for the NMI watchdog?

We tried nmi_watchdog = 2 on the grub.conf on the kernerl line as 1 is already by default but that did not work either.

    Any suggestion is highly appreciated.

    Thank you very much,

    Hi,

it sounds like a weird virtual hardware related bug.

Maybe the NMI can't work well in a virtual machine. NMI seems to be a hardware associated feature.

Anyway, as mentioned in the last reply () try (if you can in your enviroment) running in a 1 vCPU.

    Maybe this helps.

    Regards/Saludos,

    Pablo
