  • 1.  Cannot boot VM from DVD

    Posted Jul 02, 2010 01:15 PM

    Hi all,

Installed ESXi4 onto an Hp Proliant ML115 g5 with an E200 controller. ESXi4 is booting OK from a USB stick.

Created a VM to install Ubuntu 64 bit - set the boot sequence of the VM to start with the DVD device. No joy. Always tries to install from the Network boot from Intel E1000.

The DVD iso is bootable on the HP machine - tried it, so DVD device and ISO file are OK.

VM settings for the CD/DVD are currently set to Client device / passthrough IDE - have set bootup delay to 20000 ms and tried to connect CD during bootup phase but still no joy.

Setting the CD/DVD to Host device returns No Devices available. Setting to Datastore ISO File shows the datastore but not the DVD device.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Best regards

    Bryan

Copy the ISO to the ESX datastore. Add the ISO to the Cd/DVD of the VM, make SURE you enabled connected at boot (you would be surprised how many people miss this step). Then try it again.

OK, I've no idea how to do that.

Running VSphere client to connect to the server, how do I copy files across to the data store?

    Bryan,

I assume you already created or have an ISO image file.

Login to the vSphere client, right click the datastore you want to upload the ISO file to and select "browse datastore". Create a folder (e.g. "ISO-Repository") and then select the upload icon to select and upload the ISO file to this folder.

    Andre,

Thanks for the help. I'll give it a try over the weekend and get back.

    Cheers

Many thanks for the help on this.

Managed to copy the ISO and set the VM to boot from it. OS loaded, all hunky dory.
