  • 1.  Can not Migrate VM : Operation not allowed

    Posted Jan 20, 2011 05:28 PM

I have a 3 host cluster, in which I can not migrate a VM from one host to the others.  The only error msg I receive is in the Migration wizard, after I select the host to move it to, the Compatibilty window says:

"The operation is not allowed in the current connection state of the host."

Could someone point me in the right direction as to determining what the issue is, is there more detailed logs that would enlighten me?  I look at each host vNetwork / vSwitch configuration and they look the same.  The only host Warning I have is,

"Host xyz currenlty has no management network redundancy".

Will this msg disable the migration of VMs from one host to another??  I will be adding redundancy a bit later but during this initial setup stage I'm unable to.

Any advice or direction would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Have a look through http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1003684

    Are you in maintenance mode?

None of the hosts are in Maintenance Mode.

All three hosts are identical Dell PE710s, same amount of memory, etc.

I have HA & DRS enabled on the cluster, fully automatic at this point. This is a new deployment, btw.

Lack of network redundancy won't disable the process.

You have vMotion enabled on the vSwitch?

Can you vMotion any of your guests to any other host? Check the events tab to see if there is any messages.

You can try looking at the realtime logs while you start a vMotion process to see if it indicates anything. ALT + F12 at the console.

Tech Support mode and try tail -f /var/log/vmkernel

I just tried to do a migration again, the only thing I've done is restarted the vCenter server & logged in via CLI.. And this is the warning I receive now in the Compatibility window:

"No guess OS heartbeats are being received. Either the guest OS is not responding or VMWare Tools is not configured correctly"

But the Next button is not grayed out, I can select it. It looks like it will migrate ? What would a reboot of vCenter cleared? The VM is a Windows 2008 R2 server.

I'm not sure what VMware Tools settings could be incorrect here....

Unless there's a network issue with my second host not sending heartbeats back to vCenter... I'm check in into it!!

You might also want to restart the management agents on the Hosts. You can do that from the Host console.

Basically I agree with DSTAVERT, the missing redundancy warning should not prevent from migrating a VM. However, it seems it does.

You could try to configure "das.ignoreRedundantNetWarning" = "true" in the advanced settings of HA. Please make sure you don't forget to remove this settings (or set it to "false") once you have a redundant network configuration, in order to receive the warnings again in case of a failure.

PS: Forgot to mention: After setting this option, you may need to reconfigure the hosts for HA.

Just disable acceleration on the stuborn VM and it will migrate.

Edit Settings, Options Tab, General, then tick "Disable Acceleration"
