  • 1.  Can I point update manager from one server to the other?

    Posted Feb 02, 2009 07:54 PM

I have two servers with Update manager installed. Only one server has access to the internet. Could I say take server 2 (with no internet) and point it through the update manager setup to

server 1 (with internet access). Will server 1 be able to keep an up to date list of server from both VC's of what is patched and what isn't? Or is there another way to do this? Can I point the update services to

the UM on server one instead?

    Thanks

It's an interesting question, I take it you mean like you can chain WSUS servers with a primary server downloading the patches from Microsoft and the others downloading from the primary server? The only way I'm aware of doing this is to export, transfer and import the patches from one server to the other which is covered in the Update Manager help file. When trying to resolve another issue I did spot that if you run vmware-updatemgr.exe -H it reports

    Supported serviceName: vmware-ufad-slave vmware-ufad-client vmware-ufad-vmi vmware-ufad-p2v

Unfortunately I think the other modes are related to the VMware Convertor Service.

Since the bulk of the traffic in the patch retrieval process seems to occur over plain HTTP I suppose you could put an HTTP proxy like squid in the path and this would prevent the Update Manager hosts going to VMware again for the patches

Yes, very much so like that. We were hoping that we wouldn't have to move the files physical to the other server. After doing some research it seems your way is the only way at this point.

    Thank you for your time.
