  • 1.  BSOD on Source System during VM Image creation

    Posted Jul 29, 2011 07:20 PM

    Hi,

I am using  VMWare vCenter 4.3.0 build 292238 to do a remote virtual system creation from a live machine.

At about a minute into the process the source machine (old laptop with XP) gets a BSOD with a "Bad Pool Header" message.

I am running Avira for antivirus.

    Attached are the logs.

Any assistance would be appreciated as I have a couple other old machines to convert.

Please let me know if any other information is needed to assist with troubleshooting.

    Thanks

(please note I did run several other tries previous but did not have the vss service enabled on the source machine.)  The most recent attampt that failed with the BSOD was Task #10 begun around 15:12.

    Hi,

    Thank you for your suggestion.

I did try it, but I still received the same BSOD.

If it helps in troublehsooting, I have also tried disk2vhd and that is not successful either (although it simply errors out and does not cause a bsod).

Would it be easier (is there a way) to create a virtual image (bootable os) of the disk when it is not in use?  I know there are tools to create virtual data disks from a slave drive.  I can easily power down the laptop, remove the drive, and attach it as a slave to another machine.

    Thanks again

I have used Drivesnapshot http://drivesnapshot.de to clone a disk. The program is installed directly in the OS to be copied. Clone to an external location. You can mount the cloned image and the run converter against the mounted image.

    Thanks.

That appears to be running ok.  I will post an update after it completes and I attempt the conversion.

    Thanks again

Machines that have been around for a while tend to accumulate junk. I would uninstall as much of the junk as you can before converting.

Do understand that you may run afoul of the Microsoft EULA if you install an OEM version of XP on anything other than the machine it was originally installed on.

I wasn't thinking that would be an issue for XP?

    Funny you mention that.

It's true, but also part of the reason I want to keep the machine around (it has some good utilities installed that I want to keep but don't necessarily want on my prime machine).

I actually spent some time cleaning it up using ccleaner, unistalling old progs and doing a defrag.  Cleared about 1/4 of the disk up.

Looks like the program will run the initial backup for a couple more hours.
