Don't know about the history - I have seen pretty hard cases of Downloading in the Past.
Now, at the war time, a verification IS required in order to avoid hostile countries taking benefit from the inventions made in the so-called Western World. I mean, if you are an American software company.
As for instructions of Verification - there has been instructions for that a couple of times per month. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as Sticky Posts in this Forum. There is Search, however, like on every Forum ever invented - in my limited experience. The actual Verification forms, they work wrong - you need to be a bit more intelligent than the Forum coder for getting it to work.
As for Free software - how do you get Free software, I mean since the invention of DOS and Windows & Linux thereafter? You get it from the interwebs (previously from floppies). Luckily, we have Google nowadays. The risk is the same than with anything else in, when you load your software from the interwebs. On Linux, Workstation/Player has never been delivered with the Distro, but because of the way Linux works versus Windows, the risk is rather limited if you Download it from somewhere else than VMware Pages (Broadcom pages only exists now).
You CAN also pay for VMware. Just load an old version and buy the license from interwebs, it is available there. Unfortunately, you get the license for a lot less than the list price.

All I wish to do is to download WS for my Linux distro. Impossible. Still waiting on Broadcom's "Account Verification" fraud. Never in the history of software companies has it ever been harder to simply download a FREE app. At this point I would actually consider paying for the **** thing.
