  • 1.  Bridged Network Problem on Host Win11 - Guest Win10/Win7 - only small files are transfered

    Posted 29 days ago

VMware Workstation Player 17.5.1 and 17.0.0

    Host: Windows 11 Enterprise, 64-bit

    Guest: Win10 or Win7

Setup is a bridged connection via an Ethernet adapter to a device with FTP server. No switch or router in-between.

Previously, the setup worked well for several years on Win7 and Win10 Laptop.

Neither the VM Guests nor the FTP device have been changed and have always worked well.

The problem started after receiving new Lenovo Laptop with Win11 pre-installed.

Error pattern has now been narrowed down to:

The transfer of small files below 1KB from FTP Server to Guest VM is working.

As soon as larger files are transferred, the connection is interrupted several times - a transfer is not possible. FTP Mode is passive.

Recently discovered that NAT mode works, but this is a very bad option as I don't want to expose the device to the internet.

What I have already tried (and didn't help):

    - Reinstalling VMware Player and VMware Tools

    - Ping MTU and size changed in Guest and Host

    - Network adapter removed added again in VM Guest

    - Network adapter removed added again in VMware Player Setting

If you have any suggestions on how to make bridged mode work properly, please let me know, thank you.

Not sure on ideas for making this work with bridged but not NAT.  However, you have a major assumption incorrect.  Bridged mode makes your virtual machine connected to your network and appear like a regular PC on the network... so you DO have your VM "exposed to the internet".  NAT mode hides the VM behind your host and makes the traffic appear like it's coming from your host - if you want the outside world to connect you need to map ports for specific services.

    I have to explain that:
In my Setup for the bridged mode I only select the Ethernet adapter that is directly connected to the FTP device.
There is no switch or router in-between connected to the internet.

In NAT mode the VM Guest is able to access the internet from another ethernet- or Wifi-adapter. (should be avoided)

So if you don't want the VM to have any network/internet access, why not just select Host-Only network mode?

The root cause of this problem seems to be Lenovo hardware.
    - Lenovo Thinkpad Universal USB-C Docking Station
    - Lenovo USB-C Network Adapter (RTL8153 chipset)

After replacing the docking station, the problem disappeared.
(It has not been tested if a firmware update of the docking station would help)
