    Posted Sep 10, 2009 07:13 AM

Hi, we are using ESXi 4.0. Is there any backup option available for this version? Is it free?

Can anyone please help me how to backup the VMs running in ESXi4.0 as full image or snapshot.'

    Thanks

If you host your stiorage on NFS etc, you can use snapshots,

there are also a few commercial AND free tools available.

    Free:

    Ghetto scripts (search the community)

    Veaamm fastscp (flat vmdk copies)

    Costed:

    VMware Data Recovery Appliance

    Veeamm backup

    ESX Ranger

You should take a look at :

Trilead VM Explorer is a management tool that eases management, backup and disaster recovery tasks in your VMware ESX environment. Backups can be stored to ESX, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD based storage platforms or directly to a SAN. VM Explorer has only to be licenced once for your infrastructure, you don't have to pay any fees per ESX Server, CPU, or anything similar.

Take a look at the ghettoVCB.sh script it allows you to bakcup your virtual machines from command line.

esXpress does not currently support backup to ESXi, however it has been mentioned it is "on the roadmap for the future".... so keep an eye out there.

esXpress radically alters the notion of how to protect data in virtual infrastructures in one simple way: we use the virtual infrastructure to back itself up!

    Dear All,

Will VMWare Consolidated Backup (VCB) Supports ESXi 4.0? Because we have Tivoli backup server and it needs VCB. Is any one taking backup of VMWare ESXi 4.0 using tivoli storage manager? I will plan to buy VCB.

Yes VCB does support ESX 4i. Also VMware provides integration modules for IBM TSM as well. The readme file of VCB Integration module for the respective backup software will mention about the versions. VMware has provided VCB integration modules up till version 5.4.2. Above 5.4.2, TSM itself has VCB integrated in it.

    Thanks

Dear Rahul, Thank you four your posting. "TSM itself has VCB integrated in it" means, we do not require VCB? But it is not possible to install TSM BA clients on VMWare ESX-i 4.0. Can you suggest me the possible way of backing up VM clients running in esx-i with TSM? Thank you.

    Hi,

Trying to answer both your questions, TSM (or any other backup software supported in VMware matrix) will need VCB integration modules to be installed to backup virtual machines. These modules are provided along with VCB by VMware. However with TSM versions above 5.4.2 these modules are integrated within TSM itself. However you need VCB running because the underlining pre and post commands that enable the backup comes along with VCB only, sorry to have missed that out in my previous post.

Please refer the below redbook from IBM that has backup process explained clearly at chapter 24. hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.
