You can take a look at this free script: ghettoVCB.sh - Free alternative for backing up VM's for ESX(i) 3.5, 4.x & 5.x

Other paid alternatives are Veeam Backup and Replication, Unitrends backup and vSphere Data Protection (VMware vSphere Data Protection, Virtual Machine & Server Backup)

Just wanted to check in an see if you found a solution.

As an update to nielse's post (thanks nielse for the shoutout!), Unitrends offers both a Free Edition (4VMs, Free Forever) as well as a paid Enterprise Edition.

    A few solution highlights:

    • Protect virtual AND physical environments
    • Heterogeneous protection (100+ versions of operating systems and applications)
    • Instant recovery via failover virtualization
    • Archive data to tertiary storage for long-term retention (archive to SAN, NAS, or tape!)
    • Virtual appliance available in per TB or per resource model (whichever fits your environment and budget best)

    Evening,

I agree that Veeam is the best.  If your environment is small and you have vcenter you can also use vmware's product.

Data Protection & Data Recovery with VMware vSphere - United States

You might want to make the datastore for that appliance not VMFS something like NFS or iSCSI.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Almost every backup vendor has a option just depends on how much you want to pay.

    Thanks,

    Joseph

I’m also along the same line with those proposing Veeam for you. Have been using it for years, and it proves to be really efficient and easy-to-use solution.

Moreover, with the introduction of version 7, two main requirements we used to have towards backup plan have been addressed - tape functionality and copying backup data offsite.

Veeam Backup & Replication v7 offers support for tape devices allowing you to archive your data to tape and restore it from tape whenever needed. And new backup copy job handles the process of copying backup data offsite.

Furthermore, with the current version, we start using WAN Accelerators that reduces significantly traffic data that is being copied offsite.

So, it’s definitely worth taking a look.

    Cheers.

You should try XSIBackup, you can download it at: https://33hops.com/xsibackup-vmware-esxi-backup.html

    - It performs hot backups, so your VMs will always be available.

    - It also performs cold backups, shutting down your VM prior to the backup and turns it on when the backup has finished.

    - Warm backups allow maximum compatibility with more exotic OSs while minimizing downtime to some seconds.

    - It is cron programmable.

    - Can automatically make room for your new backup in the backup device once it is full based on the full size of the device or a configurable space limit.

    - It is capable of using Rsync to perform differential backups, mirrored to a second ESXI box or to a local datastore.

    - Can overwrite backups or create a new folder for each new backup.

    - It's self contained, will run in the hypervisor without the need of additional hardware.

    - Works on the free version of the ESXi hypervisor.

    - Will create and use it's own SSL key pair allowing to stablish trust relationships between different servers that will be preserved across reboots.

    - It's super easy to install with this a downloadable installation script.

    - A Pro version is available whith lots of additional features, like:

    - OneDiff: instant differential backups.

    - XSITools: all terrain differential deduplication engine.

    - XSIDiff: zero aware over IP copy.

If you are still looking, you might find real user reviews for Veeam and all of the other major backup solutions on IT Central Station to be helpful.

As an example, users interested in Veeam also read reviews for Acronis Backup. This user writes, "It gives us peace of mind, knowing that my data is safely stored away from my company in case of any disaster." You can read the rest of his review here.

    Good luck with your search.
