  • 1.  Another Newbie Question Re Hardware Monitoring / Nagios

    Hi,

Sorry but another newbie question !

We want to monitor server hardware such as fan speed , health of disks in raid arrays etc.

All these servers are on windows platform and are mainly HP proliant and some dell poweredge.

With the manufacture software ie hp SIM or openmanage you can get this info. Its how we get into hyperic.

We have been testing snmp with routers and its going ok.

So do we have to write a plugin to look at the MIB/OID info ?

Or use plan B, nagios plugins ?

I know nothing about nagios but i do know that there are plugins for proliant etc .

If we want to use these plugins what do we have to do ? setup up nagios server , install agents on servers , and point hyperic at nagios server ? or can we just install nagios agent
and plugin on servers and point local hyperic agent at plugiin ?

Any help greatly appreciated and if its a stupid question I apologise ?

    Thanks

I am currently in the process of developing hardware monitoring plugins. We run Dell and Sun hardware mainly. I have chosen to use the vendor-specific software like OpenManage, so I can read hardware status values using SNMP. Unfortunately, I must say that it has not been a very smooth ride so far, mainly because the Hyperic documentation is seriously lacking on this subject, so it is basically a process of trial and error. At times, I had no other option than to resort to examining and/or editing the Hyperic source code :-(

I have attached a very basic (but working) initial version of the Dell plugin to this post.
It would be great if others joined me in my efforts. I am sure there must be more people that would like to see more hardware monitoring support in Hyperic. I have setup a preliminary plugin page in Hyperforge for this plugin: http://support.hyperic.com/confluence/display/hypcomm/Dell+Systems

Anyone who would like to help out and/or make suggestions is more than welcome!

    Hi Leander,

I've created a Plugin for SUN X64 server:
    http://support.hyperic.com/confluence/display/hypcomm/Sun+X64+Systems
It would be great if you give it a try.

Btw: The best place to publish plugins is
    http://support.hyperic.com/confluence/display/hypcomm/HyperFORGE

    Cheers,
    Mirko

    Hi Mirko,

yes, I had noticed that already. I've been focussing on monitoring Dell boxes for now, as they comprise the vast majority of our hardware. I'll test your plugin soon; thanks and good work!

By the way, could you please check out this problem report?

It's annoying the crap out of me that I can't get that to work :-(
