  • 1.  Adding a second vSwitch on an ESXi free host.

    Hello,

I have a host with a vSwitch currently configured to pass multiple VLANS to various VMs.

    vSwitch0

    vmnic5

    vmnic4

    vmnic1

    vmnic0

vmnic6 -- want to isolate this off

I want to isolate vmnic6 to a specific adapter on a VM without it sharing with the other port groups.  From what I have read, creating another vSwitch would provide the proper isolation as I am port mirroring to that specific port for data recording.  Would this interfere with connectivity to the other VMs or hosts if I added this?  Please see attachment for pic of current vSwitch setup.  Thanks!

Adding another vSwitch with vmnic6 as the uplink should work just fine. As soon as you remove vmnic6 from vSwitch0, all VM's which currently use this uplink will be moved to another available vmnic/uplink, which is like un-plugging/re-plugging the network cable (just a lot faster).
