in vsphere, I have 2 hbas vvmhba0 vmhba1 but it shows 4 WWns. why is that?

Can you please post a screenshot?

Ah OK.  Yeah this can be a little bit confusing.  The first number is the WWN of the HBA card.  The second number is the WWPN (World Wide Port Name) of the port on the card.

for netapp, how come it does not use wwn but use wwpn number instead?

Are you fiber connected?  It would make sense if you are.

yes fiber. but in netapp filer, i can see the wwn of the hba not the wwpn

This is the info from the links that were posted above

In computing, a World Wide Port Name, WWPN, or WWpN, is a World Wide Name assigned to a port in a Fibre Channel fabric. Used on storage area networks, it performs a function equivalent to the MAC address in Ethernet protocol, as it is supposed to be a unique identifier in the network.

A World Wide Node Name, WWNN, or WWnN, is a World Wide Name assigned to a node (an endpoint, a device) in a Fibre Channel fabric. It is valid for the same WWNN to be seen on many different ports (different addresses) on the network, identifying the ports as multiple network interfaces of a single network node.

The WWPN is needed by your HBA to know exactly which port/controller to use on the san.  The WWNN is assigned to all ports/controllers in the SAN.

ok but when creating a initiator in netapp, the netapp is discovering only the wwn. i had to manually type in the wwpn manually which was kind of strange. for the windows hosts, it was able to discover the wwpn automatically not esx

Are you sure it discovers WW(n)N and not WW(p)N?

Usually you want to use WW(p)N for your zones and mapping because same WW(n)N can have several WW(p)Ns associated with it, in other words multiple WW(p)N can "have" the same WW(n)N if they belong to the same storage controller.

Might sound confusing. You can just "ignore" WWnN and use WWpN.

it does not see the 21:00.... number the second number shown in vsphere. this is the number needed as a initiator in netapp. but the netapp only detects the first number 20:00.... shown in vsphere

In SAN fabric management you can zone either WWnN or WWpN. NetApp will see only what's zoned to it.

Do you use FC switches or direct connect ESX to NetApp?

What is the Filer type you are using?
