  • 1.  Linux VM sharing internet connection with OS X Yosemite host

    Posted Jan 21, 2015 06:12 AM

I am running OS X yosemite on my macbook pro retina,  but I have a ralink USB wifi antenna, which does not have a driver for OS X Yosemite (10.10).  Therefore I resort to connect the USB antenna to my macbook pro and let VMware Fusion to connect to the Linux VM.  In this way, the Linux VM now has internet access.

However, how can I set up the host to VM network so that the OS X Yosemite host can get internet access from the Linux VM?

Currently inside the VM, I set eth0 to 192.168.2.2/24

At the VM network setting, I checked the "connect network adapter" box, and selected the bridged networking to "Thunderbolt Internet".

Then at the host "System Preferences, I set the address of the "Thunderbolt Internet" to 192.168.2.128/24 and router to 192.168.2.2

However, the thunderbolt ethernet interface refuses to be turned on (I haven't plugged anything in)

I tried the same for thunderbult bridge, but none worked and the host still does not have internet access.

    What should I do?

I have to say it really irks me when a User only states "Linux VM" while providing as much other information as did and does not include at the very least the Distribution Name and Version including bitness and nice to also include the Kernel version being used as in many instances it does make a difference when replying! :smileywink:  In other words I would have probably been able to give more specific and step-by-step instructions... So generally speaking what you're attempting to do, although not how you're attempting it, should be doable and without knowing the omitted information what I'll say is Google is your friend! :smileywink:  The answers are usually already out there!

With that said... Just for a reference, as it involves a Windows XP VM, I wrote a document Share_Windows_XP_Guest_Internet_Connection_with_OS_X_Host_HOWTO.pdf in this thread Share Windows XP Guest Internet Connection with OS X Host HOWTO.  Although using Windows and ICS is more straightforward and probably easier then with Linux and ICS however the same should be doable under Linux.

So, enable ICS under Linux and also configure the Firewall to allow the Guest to be an Internet Gateway if enabling ICS alone does not and then use the Wi-Fi Network Adapter on the Host to create a computer to computer network to connect to the Guest for Internet Connectivity.

Sorry for my omission..... I am using Lubuntu 15.04 (x86_64) with kernel 3.16.0-28-generic.  I am also using VMware Fusion 7.1.0 Professional

I am going to try out the Windows instructions to see if it works on the combination of Lubuntu guest and OS X host.....

    Thx!
