Problem: Blue Screen Of Death (bsod) 7b immediately after migration assistant built the vm.  Safe Mode does not work either and results in same.  Last step reported is mup.sys.

What am I trying to accomplish:  Move to macbook pro and be able to run my old Windows apps ( MSoffice, Quicken, vpn with my office, etc.) on my migrated files.

    Host: macbook pro, max OS X 10.6.7, 2.3 GHz Intel i5, 4GB 1333 Mhz DDR3

    Running VMware Fusion v 3.1.2 (332101)

boot into bios and checked settings:

       - my guest uses IDE controllers to talk to 2 physical hd

       - saw many KB articles about scsi drivers but I don't seem to need any

       - the main drive has partitions C, D, E, F

booted from cd-rom containing WinXP_Home sp2 repair console

      - ran chkdsk /P

      - ran fixboot

tried repairing virtual disk using vmware-vdiskmanager

every item runs great but bsod 7b continues

My copy of Windows XP_Home sp2 is an upgrade disk and I have the CD key

    of the original full version.

    Hi,

Welcome at the VMware community forums.

Seems like you've tried a few things already!

You are right, normally a 7B error has to do with not having the correct scsi drivers installed, but as your VM uses IDE disks, that's not what causing the errors.

I did a quick google search and while you should be able to disable the mup.sys (multi unc provider) that is used for novell networking using the windows recovery console, the problem is more likely that it is due to some windows registry corruption.

it is probably best/easiest to run windows repair from the windows setup.

I take it you have your original windows machine still there in case you have to go back one step? If not, then always make a backup before you continue with steps like these. Of course you can also use the snapshot feature in Fusion, but that's never the replacement for a real backup.

    Wil,

    Thank you for your comments.

I started Windows repair using the Windows startup disk.

It is reporting problems copying many files from G:\i86 with

extensions of dl_ ic_ ex_ and others. I browse for the file

and it is on the CD but without any extension or maybe the explorer

window is hiding extensions. I hover over them and it reports

they are of the type requested but the copy fails to acknowledge

    they are the file requested.

I am having to cancel the file copy and confirm that I want to proceed

anyway. Am I wasting my time and should I abort?

    I await your opinion.

    Regards,

    Dirk25

Sounds like the OS is indeed hiding the file extensions. In Windows XP it is fairly easy to switch that off in Windows Explorer, Menu Tools > Folder Options > View tab > Uncheck "Hide known extension for file types" checkbox.

Then press the "Apply to All Folders" button.

The files .dl_ and .ex_ are in fact packed versions of .dll and .exe files.

The windows repair operation should be able to copy these without any problems.

Did you start the repair by booting for the CD?

I'm getting a feeling that your CD might be damaged or that your CD drive is having problems, but it is a bit hard to say without any more detailed information.

    Wil,

After fighting through the Windows recover and canceling the files it could not find to copy it completed and rebooted. The bsod was gone but it went from the black background windows splash to all black. I waited and finally I had to select virtual machine -> shutdown. I decided to reboot my macbook. When I tried to bring it up from start it worked!!! Your solution was the correct one. My problem is fixed.

    Thanks.

The migration assistent probably can not handle IDE-disks.

If you have a way to either boot that VM with a Windows LiveCD or can attach that vm dk to another Windows-VM I can tell you how to fix that.

You need to make sure that IntelIDE and ATAPI drivers are enabled at boot - thats a registry entry for both drivers.
You also need to check if IntelIDE is established in CriticalDeviceDataBase
