  • 1.  How to connect to Wi-Fi with the MAC address of the guest OS?

    Posted May 03, 2019 07:58 AM

    Host OS: Mojave.

    Guest OS: Linux (Ubuntu).

When I connect my MacBook to a Wi-Fi/ router, it connects via the MacBook’s MAC address for Wi-Fi even when I’m running the virtual machine. Does anyone have a suggestion for how I could make the virtual machine’s MAC address take precedence?

Do you want to connect via Wifi or via a cable ?
If via cable use bridged networking for the VM.
If via Wifi buy a USB-Wifi-adapter and connect it to the VM.

To clarify: it concerns wireless Wi-Fi connections.

Thanks for the advice. A couple of questions, though...

To have a USB Wi-Fi adapter connect to the virtual machine with the result that my MacBook's Wi-Fi MAC address is bypassed: which system settings would it require? Moreover,  USB Wi-Fi adapters, don't they have their own (and presumably static) MAC addresses? If correct: how to avoid that the Wi-Fi connection goes via the adapter's MAC address?

No way - if you use an external USB-device it will use its own MAC address.

Nothing special - assign no ethernet device at all and make sure to enable USB-support.

”No way - if you use an external USB-device it will use its own MAC address.”

Right. So, does anyone else have a suggestion for how to make the VM’s MAC address connect to Wi-Fi (wireless connection)?

The MAC address is for the virtual LAN adapter in the VM.

Your best bet is to use a USB wi-fi adapter that allows you to override the MAC address from that device's configuration.

Things don't work that way... What are you actually trying to do? What problem are you aiming to solve for and why?
