Is the VM running, suspended, or powered off?

Well, then that is why. Can you hot-add RAM in your running PC (without risking frying it, that is)? You can't do it in the virtual world either. Shut down your guest (NOT just suspended), then you can edit the virtual hardware.

There are workstations with hotswap PCI, cpu and memory.

And because it is only editing a value and not physical, I don't think there is any chance of being 'fried' except in virtual space.

I haven't heard of any \*workstation* class computers which allow such things. There may be some \*server* class computers which do - though all that's been mentioned in the forum are hard drive hot-adds. In any case, the guest's virtual hardware which it sees is an Intel 440BX chipset motherboard... which definitely does NOT support such things.

AFAIK, that's not an x86 computer. :smileywink:

The first workstation I remember was RS6000. That wasn't x86 either. And workstation usually meant $10-25K to $100K.
