I installed FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE under VMWare Fusion. It's up and running, but there are questions. First, it's not clear how to install VMWare tools, nor if these tools (apparently crafted for Linux) will work under FreeBSD. Second, the screensize seems limited to 640x480, probably because there are no VMWare tools - I'm guessing that these include a new video driver.

Can anyone point a way around these issues?

FreeBSD is a supported guest (Choose Other under OS and FreeBSD under Version). It has it's own VMWare tools package. Installing them should solve your small screen resolution.

To install the tools, install the OS and log into the guest. Use the 'Virtual Machine' menu on the menu bar and choose the install tools option. In the guest, mount a CD as you would if you were on a physical machine, \[extract the tar] run the perl install script and follow the instructions.

VMware tools exist for multiple platforms, including FreeBSD, so no need to try to hack up the Linux tools. If you select Virtual Machine > Install Tools, does FreeBSD see the tools CD? (this only works if you chose the correct OS type during the install, as in SMB's post). If you didn't, you can manually attach the tools image, it lives at /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/isoimages/freebsd.iso

I've never used FreeBSD, but I assume that you expand vmware-freebsd-tools.tar.gz and run vmware-install.pl (probably as root).

Edited to reference iso location. -etung 2007.05.31 16:47

I thought this would be the answer to my problem but then I discovered that my /Library/Application Support/ doesn't have a VMware Fusion folder at all. So how do I get VMware Tools installed if I don't have access to vmware-freebsd-tools.tar.gz? And why would my Library be empty to begin with?!?

    TIA

P.S. I did choose the correct OS (FreeBSD) during the VM install too? It makes no sence to me... (this is under Leopard)

And why would my Library be empty to begin with?!

If your running Fusion then it's there!

    "/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/isoimages/freebsd.iso"

Stop looking in your Library Folder below and look in the System Library Folder above. :smileyhappy:

    "/Users/$/Library/Application Support/"

Thanks! The menu item to install the tools didn't make a cdrom image available to the VM, at least, not anywhere FreeBSD could find it, but with the second reply I was able to manually mount the image and install the tools from there. The screen seems fine now.
