  • 1.  DVD drive / USB Ports will not work while using Fusion

    Posted Jun 11, 2008 02:14 PM

I have XP Pro SP2 installed on my MBP 2.2Ghz, 2g ram running as guest OS. I can't get the drive to work or the usb ports while I'm using fusion. i can see the drive and ports in the bottom of the window but I can't access the thumb drive in the USB port. It will not play movies or anything. i can see the movie in the drive but it will not play. I am trying to use PQ DVD software and the message that I get from VMWare is:

"Your virtual machine has sent an ATAPI (CD-ROM) command that is supported only when programming the drive via DMA. You will need to configure your guest operating system to use DMA when communicating with DVD/CD-ROM devices. Note that some operating systems will report DMA is available without actually using it. In those cases normal cd-rom operations will still be available, but special features will only be available if you reconfigure the virtual device as a SCSI device."

Too complicated for me. I would purchase the program but if I can't use the drive then what's the point. Someone please help.

Please follow the below steps to configure the DMA controller in Guest OS

    1) Right Click on My Computer and select Properties

    2) Click on the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button

    3) Click on the plus control of the "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" section

    4) Select and Right click on the "Secondary IDE Controller", and select ‘Properties'

    5) Click the ‘Advanced Settings' tab

    6) My guess is that Device 0 (or Device 1 if you are using an IDE disk) Transfer Mode setting likely says "PIO Only"

    7) Click on the Transfer Mode setting to "DMA if available" and click OK

    8) Restart the virtual machine.

    IT STILL DOESN'T WORK.

Thank you for your reply Kristein. I did what you said and this is what I saw:

There wasn't a secondary IDE controller just a primary.

    device 0

    device type: auto detection

transfer mode: ultra dma if applicable

current transfer mode: ultra dma mode 2

    device 1

    device type: auto detection

    transfer mode: dma if applicable

    current transfer mode: not applicable

It's still doing doing the same error message.

This is happening to me as well. My primary and secondary IDE controller are set to "DMA if available.

My host is Leopard and the Guest is XP Pro. The host drive is connected via SATA.

    Hi there,

Can you provide screenshots of the exact error messages you are getting.

Also please attach the support logs for review, with Fusion in focus.. "Help" >> "Collect Support Information"

    Thanks!

My DVD drive is working fine. My problem is the USB devices. Even though they show as being connected both in the bar at the bottom of the vm machine window and in the USB devices settings in the vm machine menu bar I still cannot see them in "my computer". I am running Windows XP service pack 3 as my guest on a Mac OSX Leopard host. All help is greatly appreciated.
