Guest debian 12, mouse not releasing

I have a clean guest install of debian 12, it also has open vm tools installed to.

When I click in the guest area, the mouse is captured (but no mouse pointer visible) and also I have to click ctrl+cmd to release the mouse.

How do I fix the mouse not showing and auto release?
