Mounting a vmdk in Fusion

    I have a bunch of older virtual machines and .vmdk files from my Windows PC from various backups before I switched over to using Fusion.  I'm now using Fusion 5 under  Mavericks and I have been restarting the old virtual machines to see what user files may be contained within that I want to preserve.  When the machine will no longer boot I have followed the instructions to attach the existing virtual disk as a second hard disk to an existing Windows XP virtual machine (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&externalId=2005146)

      but this is very time consuming.

    There used to be a way to mount the .vmdk files as a disk image in Mac OS X so a person could just copy the files from the image (http://superuser.com/questions/247915/os-x-reading-vmdk-files) using VMDK mounter.  However, that application file does not appear to be in the indicated location.

    Is there still a way to mount .vmdk files under Mac OS X without having to individually attach each drive to an existing virtual machine?

    One small correction -- I am using Fusion version 4.1.3 (730298) and not version 5 as I previously indicated.

    Here are a couple of choices...

    Install Parallels Desktop for Mac and then use Parallels Mounter.  (You don't necessarily have to use Parallels, just Parallels Mounter from the context menu.)

    Or use Pacifist to install the VMDKMounter.app from a VMware Fusion 3.1.x installer .dmg file.

    You'll also need to install FUSE for OS X to use VMDKMounter.  When installing FUSE for OS X, you need to check the MacFUSE Compatibility Layer check box.

    If you manually extract the VMDKMounter.app from a VMware Fusion 3.1.x installer .dmg file you'll need to make sure of the proper permissions on the bundle and its files as shown in the image below.

    The correct permissions for the VMDKMounter.app bundle and the vmware-vmdkMounter executable are 755 and the Owner/Group is root:wheel.  Additionally the vmware-vmdkMounterTool needs to be set to 4755.   (This can be done with both chown and chmod in a Terminal.)

    Note:  You may need to manually execute the VMDKMounter.app one time after its installed and or logout/login for VMDKMounter to show on the Open With context menu in Finder.  (You can also use killall Finder in a Terminal vs. logging out/in.)

    Hi,

    I've followed your steps and I can successfully mount my volume. FAT16, but its read only. Is there a way to write to these volumes?

    FAT16?  Okay I created a 2 GB virtual hard disk and formatted it FAT16.  I then mounted it with VMDKMounter and it mounted as expected, Read/Write not Read-Only.  So without additional information there is not much I can offer.

    The easiest thing to do is attach the VMware Fusion Support Information bundle to a reply.  So... To help figure out what is what, the best way to provide comprehensive diagnostic information is to use the "Collect Support Information" command from the VMware Fusion (menu bar) > Help > Collect Support Information and then attach the .zip file (or .tgz file if pre-version 6) it created on your Desktop to a reply post.

    Otherwise at a minimum I need to know the following and need the VMDKMounter log files however the Support bundle is preferable as it already contains this information and additional logs to help diagnose/troubleshoot the issue.

    What version of (Mac) OS X are you using?

    What version of VMware Fusion are you using?

    What version of VMware Fusion did you pull the VMDKMounter.app bundle from?

    How did you install it, with Pacifist, manually or other?

    Are the permissions on the VMDKMounter.app bundle and files therein as shown in the Proper_permissions-owner_for_VMDKMounter.png shown above?

    What version of OSXFuse did you install and did you check theMacFUSE Compatibility Layer check box during the install?

    Archive (compress) an attach the /Users/${USER}/Library/Logs/VMDKMounter folder.  It should contain two files, VMDKMounter.log and  vmdkMounterUI.log.  You can ctrl-click (right-click) on the /VMDKMounter folder and select Compress "VMDKMounter" and then move the VMDKMounter.zip file to your Desktop for easier attaching.

    Note: Use the "Use advanced editor" link in the upper right corner of the normal reply window to bring up the Advanced Editor where you'll be able to attach files via the Choose File button or Browse button (depending on the Browser) above the Post Message button!

    It's mounting Read-Only because the virtual hard disk is attached to a Suspended Virtual Machine.  You need to unmount the disk, resume the suspended Virtual Machine and then shutdown, not suspend, the Virtual Machine.  Then it should mount Read/Write! :smileywink:

    You can try a special tool from Paragon Software: Virtual Disk Mounter.

    Beta version is available here: http://www.paragon-software.com/support/betatesting/vd-mounter-mac-beta/index.html

    This utility allows to mount VMDK on 10.7-10.9
