  • 1.  Migration Assistant: Whose (Admin) User Name and Password?

My company-owned PC has two user accounts on it. One is an administrator-level account used by IT whenever they have to do stuff (once, twice a year). I do not know the username or the password for that account. The other account is mine, and it does NOT have administrator-level privileges.

When running VMware Fusion Migration Assistant the dialog states "Enter the Administrator user name and password for your PC." (See attached screenshot.)

My question is: Should I try to get the username and password for IT's admin-level account and use that with Migration Assistant, or should I try to get IT to temporarily give my account admin-level privileges in order to run Migration Assistant? Would both of those options work? I want to know exactly what I need before approaching the mighty Wizards of Oz (think flames and noise and fear and all) and asking for such privileges.

Do you have your Companies permission to be doing what you are? If the Physical Machine is still going to be running you need to have an additional license to also create a Virtual Machine from it if it running Windows.

Also you need to Have Administrative rights if you want to use the Migrate Your PC... command in Fusion 3 and also to install VMware Tools.

So before doing anything get permission from your Company and get administrative rights.

Problem solved. It turns out my PC user account does have admin privileges after all, so that wasn't why Migration Assistant was rejecting my username/password. The problem was that I was not including a domain name as part of my username. I've migrated (28 gigabytes in an hour) and I'm now up and running. Sweet!

    Wrong:

    myUsername

    Right:

    myDomain\myUsername

PS to WoodyZ: Yes, I have authorization and permission from my company and I have all necessary software licenses. I will be using only the one copy of Windows (and Office and other Win apps). Your concern about corporate authorization and licensing issues is duly noted! My avoidance and fear of my company's IT group is due to their ignorance and fear of anything Mac. Getting their 'help' would likely have tripled the time needed to resolve the issue. If you have experience working in a Microsoft-centric company you can appreciate this! :smileyhappy:
